Thick black borders

Hi everyone.

Recently, I've been getting random thick, black borders around certain application windows, for example in the File Explorer and Software & Updates. When I move the window, it tears, like it's not being composited. So I thought it may be a compositor issue, but I switched to picom (Xrender) and, with the same apps, it had some weird transparent artifacts around it. Then, switching back to the builtin Xpresent (which I was on) removed the black borders, but then switches back to some old X11 window manager movement where the window doesn't move but an outline does and you can then place it.

If this is helpful, my laptop is a Thinkpad T400 using GM45 (i915) graphics, and using the MATE desktop environment. If you need any more specs, or images, please let me know.

In the mean time I will be using the Compiz compositor because it seems like that's working.

A contributor reported "black frame around most windows" a couple of months ago. A solution was provided by icarlongo: https://trisquel.info/en/forum/trisquel-12-troubleshooting#comment-182961 --- is it helpful for you?

Thanks, this does fix the border. That explains how when I changed the compositor it fixed it, however I still am getting the "old style" window movement as I described; maybe this can be due to a Marco setting, I'm not sure (happens with both built-in Xpresent and picom, and I couldn't find anything on MATE tweak or Windows options).

I'm still concerned how a quick compositor change is needed to fix the borders, could be an issue with default settings or window exclusion (certain apps may set window attributes and the compositor ignores them due to that?). I'll look into that when I've got time.

"Do not show window content when moving windows" is selected in MATE Tweak?
